Our approach on blood transfusion refusal
At our hospital, we will respond to patients who refuse to receive blood transfusions for religious reasons as follows based on the policy of " Bloodless medicine and surgery " (*).
- We will do our best to provide non-blood transfusion treatment, but in the event of an emergency when the hospital determines that blood transfusion is the only life-sustaining treatment, prior explanation and consent cannot be obtained because we give first priority to saving lives. In any case, we will perform a blood transfusion.
- All surgeries and treatments that may cause bleeding may involve blood transfusions. If consent for surgery or treatment cannot be obtained due to the patient's or family's refusal of blood transfusion, and emergency surgery or treatment is necessary to save the patient's life, we will perform surgery even if it is against the patient's or family's will.
- Even if the patient or family presents a document regarding “Refusal of blood transfusion and exemption from responsibility" or other requests, our hospital will not sign the document agreeing to "Absolutely non-transfusion treatment"*.
- The hospital will fully explain the treatment policy of the hospital to patients, guardians, or representatives who are able to make their own decisions, and will make every effort to obtain their understanding. However, if you are unable to obtain an understanding and does not require an emergency medical attention, we recommend that you seek treatment at another hospital.
- The above policies apply regardless of whether the patient is conscious or not, and regardless of whether the patient is an adult or a minor. However, if our hospital determines that it is necessary, we may report to other related organizations such as child guidance centers.
*Bloodless medicine and surgery:
Respecting the view of the patient and striving for non-transfusion treatment as much as possible, but the standpoint/thinking that blood transfusion will be performed when there is no other means of lifesaving other than blood transfusion.
*Absolutely non-transfusion treatment:
Respecting the patient's will and not giving blood transfusions under any circumstances.
